Discover the Maritime Museum of San Diego
San Diego’s Maritime Museum has some of the best collections of naval history in the country. There is no shortage of museums in San Diego but the one at 1492, North Harbor Drive stands out with historic ships, a calendar full of events and permanent exhibits that will intrigue and captivate you. The museum is across the road from Waterfront Park, and several other city attractions are nearby, including USS Midway, Contemporary Art Museum, Civic Theatre and Children’s Museum among others.
The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. up to the Labor Day weekend. It closes an hour early at 8 p.m. after the weekend through fall. A few ships and parts of the museum may be inaccessible at times due to maintenance or may be closed for special events. You can opt for general admission or reserve group tours. Some exhibits are on display till 7 p.m.
General admission is $16 for adults, $13 for seniors and military veterans as well as teens with a valid student ID, $8 for children under the age of twelve but older than three. There is a family pass for four, two adults & two children, priced at $43. General admission will allow access to the historic ships but not any special event that might require an additional ticket. Prices of tickets for different events vary.
Explore the submarines, ships and powered boats including America, HMS Surprise, B-39 Submarine, PCF 816 Swift Boat, Californian, San Diego Harbor Pilot Boat, Steam Ferry Berkeley, San Salvador, Steam Yacht Medea, USS Dolphin and Star of India. Some of the popular exhibits are the swift boats used in Vietnam, Sailor’s Life and Steering Small, but these are not on display permanently. Permanent exhibits include the Ages of Sail and Steam, Navy, Brink of War, Charting the Sea and Harvesting the Ocean.
