Spend a Day at USS Midway Museum
San Diego, California is a popular location for tourists all year because of its breathtaking views, gorgeous beaches, magnificent attractions, rich history, world-class dining and is a short distance from other major cities.
USS Midway Museum
The USS Midway, now retired, was the longest-serving aircraft carrier in the 20th Century. Named after the Battle of Midway of June 1942, it was built in only 17 months and was commissioned for multiple wars, including the Cold War, Vietnam, and Operation Desert Storm. Midway was the first in a three-ship class of large carriers to feature an armored flight deck and a group of 120 powerful planes. On April 11, 1992, the Midway was decommissioned. It was donated to the 501(c)3 nonprofit San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum organization in 2003 and opened as the USS Midway Museum for all to enjoy in June 2004.
The Midway offers hangar, flight deck, and below deck exhibits, as well as an aircraft gallery. Some popular activities include Battle of Midway Theatre, flight simulators, an overnight adventure for those feeling brave, the Junior Pilot Program, and Catapult & Trap talks where educated speakers teach about a variety of built-in defenses. There are a variety of youth, and teacher programs, and all-around entertainment for the whole family. And opportunities to learn how the soldiers lived on the vessel during the wars.
